I’m super excited to be speaking at the popular Chautauqua financial independence retreat for 2022! 😀
Before I share more on this, a bit of background on why I think an environment like this is much needed.
I’m often asked this question:
How have you gotten to where you are today?
How have I gone from a first-generation immigrant aged 14 (with no money) to financial independence aged 34?
There are a handful of things that helped me to achieve that transformation so quickly, and one of them is the strength of quality relationships built over time.
Those relationships have helped to change my mindset, improve my skill set, and given me clarity on which path to follow when I face uncertainties in life.
The experience of the pandemic over the last 18 to 24 months has been a period of reset for most people.
Money, health (mental, physical, spiritual) and relationships have come to the top of people’s priorities as they think of their lives going forward.
For me personally, a big focus this year is to continue to spend quality time in any environment that enhances at least one of these areas of priority, and if there is some fun to be had, even better!
Back in 2017 when we started The Humble Penny, I heard about a Financial Independence retreat called the Chautauqua.
It has always been on my bucket list to attend as it pretty much ticks off all the boxes above and with a lot of fun thrown in.
This year, it FINALLY gets to happen!!
I’m deeply honoured to have been invited as one of the speakers. Woohoo!! 🙌🏽
Mary and I will be there for week 2 – September 10th to September 17th of 2022.
If you’re new to the world of Chautauqua, you’re in for a fun treat. Here is some info about it:
Chautauqua was created by JL Collins, Godfather of FI and author of The Simple Path to Wealth.
JL likes to think of Chautauqua as a place for “cool conversations with cool people in cool locations.”
This is an understatement.
The retreat is spread across 2 weeks, with different speakers per week.
Each week is filled with one-to-one meetings, insightful talks on subjects such as investing, entrepreneurship, work, happiness and ofcourse, financial independence.
It’s not like attending a regular conference, which often feels transactional.
This event is really about building lifelong friendships and having enough time to have those conversations you wish you could have with the right people.
Chautauqua takes place in stunning locations each year and 2022 will be no different.
In fact, the event is being held in Colombia! 😀. I absolutely cannot wait!

JL Collins, International Best Selling author of the investing classic, The Simple Path to Wealth
JL and I became friends around 3 years ago when Mary and I met him and his wife for lunch in the UK.
I’d been a huge fan of his before that, and that lunch meeting gave me a deeper appreciation of his wisdom, charm, and intellect.
He’s well known for his super popular Stock Series and his blog was one of the very first ones that I discovered when I got online looking for trustworthy voices in the FI space.
You can read his post about Chautauqua here.
Alan Donegan, Co-Founder of Rebel Business School
Alan is one of the most creative and entrepreneurial people that I know personally.
I’m a massive fan of his openness and willingness to help other people and share knowledge. He is rare as a human being and I’m super happy to call him my friend!
Here is more about him:
Alan Donegan is co-founder of the Rebel Business School, which has helped over 16,000 people in 10 countries start their own companies.
Rebel won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2021 and has worked with organisations including Henley Business School, Westminster City Council, and the Department for Work and Pensions.
He works tirelessly to inspire people to take control of their own financial destiny, build business, invest their own money, and build the life of their dreams.
He does this through Rebel Business School, Rebel Entrepreneur the Podcast, and his blog.
Alan will run a session on developing a side hustle doing what you love to help you get to FI sooner, so if you want to make money doing what you love, don’t miss this!
Kristy and Bryce, Founders of Millennial Revolution
Kristy and Bryce are world-traveling early retirees.
We met them in person and became friends when they visited the UK in 2019 for the “Playing with FIRE” premiere.
They used to live in one of the most expensive cities in Canada, but instead of drowning in debt, they rejected home ownership.
Very counter-cultural and it paid off!
What resulted was a 7-figure portfolio, which has allowed them to retire in their 30s and travel the world.
Their story has been featured in media outlets all over the world, including the New York Times, CBC, CNBC, Women's Health Magazine Australia, Germany’s Handelsblatt, GQ Russia, and the UK Independent.
They now spend time helping people with their finances and realizing their travel dreams on Millennial Revolution.
Their bestselling book Quit Like a Millionaire from Penguin Random House is a step-by-step guide on how to invest safely to retire early and travel the world.
JORDAN GRUMET, MD (“DOCG”), Founder of The Invest and Earn Podcast.
Jordan Grumet was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1973.
His interest in becoming a doctor was ignited when his father, an oncologist, died unexpectedly in the prime of life.
This profound loss not only inspired him to practice medicine, it has given him a unique perspective as a financial expert, challenging him to think deeply and critically about concepts like wealth, abundance, and financial independence.
After graduating from the University of Michigan, Jordan received his medical degree from Northwestern University, and began practicing Internal Medicine in Northbrook, Illinois.
He currently is an associate medical director at Journeycare Hospice.
After years of blogging about financial independence and wellness, Jordan launched the Earn & Invest podcast in 2018.
In 2019 he received the Plutus Award for Best New Personal Finance Podcast and was nominated in 2020 and 2021 for Best Personal Finance Podcast of the year.
His book, Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor’s Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life is being published by Ulysses Press in August 2022.
Listen to his podcast episode about Chautauqua here.
Then ofcourse, there is me, The Humble Penny 😉.
IS CHAUTAUQUA FOR EVERYONE?
No. This is a paid event and one that you should not get into more debt to attend.
It is also not just about the exchange of information as you can get that on various blogs, podcasts, and YouTube channels.
If, however, you’re open to a whole new world of learning, fun, experiences, and building lifelong relationships with other people interested in FI from around the world, then this is for you.
I certainly cannot wait and hope to see you at Chautauqua in Colombia! 😍
