Ok, let’s get to the point – You’re here to learn how to make money online.
I’ve spent the last couple of years learning how to make money online and can share with you candidly the realities of it.
More than 220,000 people search for this monthly on google and over 4 billion results come up when you search.
It is clear that this is something many people want, but usually, the available information is limited to America.
Folks in the UK and similar countries find it hard getting hold of high quality, actionable, and legitimate content that can help them make money online.
I can assure you that after reading this post, you’ll be extremely excited about the possibilities of how to make money online.
In fact, you should see this as Your Ultimate Guide on How to Make Money Online.
Before we dive in though, let me tell you why I love making money online and why you should too:
WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE MAKING MONEY ONLINE
A. Compounding and Leverage
The internet is ever growing in the digital age, which means that the possibilities for income online keeps increasing.
More millionaires have been made on the internet than you can possibly imagine.
We’ll discuss some of the ways you can make money online below.
If you choose the right method of making money online, you can experience non-linear growth in income.
The possibilities of 2X, 5X or even 10X your current income from your job are possible online if you’re ready to put in the learning and work required.
You also see this compounding effect with the ever growing content on a blog.
For example, at one point The Humble Penny had zero content. But through consistency, it has grown and continues to.
Compounding needs time to work, and so does making money online.
B. No Borders
There are literally no borders online.
My blog, for example, has readers from over 79 countries.
Although the majority of our readers are in the UK, USA, and Canada, the readership is growing in Australia, Europe & Africa.
Given there are no borders, if you are strategic enough, you can make money from markets that you’ve probably never visited.
A friend of mine in the UK makes over $12k a month from her blog targeted at the American market!
Yup, $12k a month and growing insanely fast!
She runs the site part time with no staff, and has been doing it for 18 months!
Although her recipe and results are unique, the ingredients are the same and can be replicated.
I share some of these with you below.
C. Diversification
If you only rely on your salary for your income, then you need to pay serious attention to what I’ll share below.
I never believed that the internet could be an area of income generation, so guess what I did?
Took an experimental approach and put it to the test, and this blog was born.
It has been a successful experiment so far, and I hope I can teach you a thing or two to help you take action.
My point here is –
The internet gives you the real opportunity to move away from one source of income.
You only need to pick 1 or 2 ideas below and it will change your reality completely if you put in the work!
Note that I keep stressing about putting in the work – No money-making activity comes easy!
And by work, I mean doing something that creates value.
D. Passive Income
There is no such thing as a 100% passive income.
However, these ideas on how to make money online give you the opportunity to learn how to make partial passive income.
This is a better quality of income than what you’d make from any job any day!

HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE FOR FREE
Let’s now dive straight into my favourite ways to make money online.
I have tried a lot of these ideas in one way or another and therefore sharing from personal experience.
Most of them are free to start whilst others involve some money. All ideas involve time.
We’ll look at these ways of making money in seven broad categories below:
HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE: Starting An Online Business
Choosing to start an online business is a good choice if you are thinking long term. Below are some ideas:
1. Start A Blog (or Website)
I’ve been blogging now for nearly 2 years, and I can honestly tell you that it is a worthwhile way to make money.
If that’s what you’re interested in. Not all blogs are created to generate an income.
Some do it for fun only, whilst others do it for fun + money.
There are even others that do it for completely different reasons such as building an audience ahead of writing a book.
Unlike many other ideas, a blog can become a business or a digital asset.
This means that over time, it is not just a source of income, but it also becomes a business (asset) that you can be sold.
Blogs are typically sold for 2X – 3X the annual profits and there is a market for it.

★★ How To Make Money Blogging ★★
At a high level, this is the result of mixing together:
- the Science of blogging (systems, structure, traffic, funnels, etc),
- And the Art of blogging (storytelling, reciprocity, psychology, building trust, etc).
Making money never happens immediately, although there are exceptions depending on how you monetise.
For example, income from offering your skills via consulting or coaching is immediate.
However, income from traffic takes ages because Google will likely not recognise your site for at least 6 months.
Below are examples of how to make money online from a blog or website:
- Income from ads – We use a truly amazing company called MediaVine. We have a revenue share of 75% (us) vs 25% (them).
- Affiliate marketing income – We market products that help our audience. E.g. Books & Resources.
- Sponsorship income – We work with complementary brands like Experian, PensionBee, etc.
- Coaching income – We sometimes offer coaching services to the truly determined.
- Course income – We generate an income from our growing online school.
- Etc
There are easily 30 – 50 different ways you can make money from a blog.
This is before you’ve even factored in all the non-monetary aspects such as collaborations, partnerships, learning etc.
The thing to note is that not all income types are equal.
Some show up literally everyday e.g. ad revenue, and therefore sticky.
Then there are those that show up monthly e.g. Sponsorship income if you’ve agreed a periodic deal with a brand.
The likes of Affiliate Marketing income offer a bit of both. Some affiliates pay one-off incomes and some pay you monthly and recurring.
You ideally want any source of income that is recurring as it is sticky revenue.
But you should NEVER compromise on value in order to make money.
To thrive at blogging, focus on offering value and building trust.
This will give you an edge over the many people out there who think they can make money without adding value.
Above all, remember that no one you see as a success has achieved it in one day or even one year.
Things take time to happen, and so does money. Have fun and let it happen naturally.
If you offer true value, the money bit is one of the inevitable rewards. That’s how life works!
★★ How Much Money You Can Make ★★
You can go from loss-making (i.e. no income but paying for hosting) to more than £20k per month.
Good blogs run by those who understand how to control and own traffic typically make £1k to £20k per month.
Exceptionally rare blogs make over £20k per month and can go to over £1m a year.
These 6 or 7 figure blogs typically have tens of thousands of followers on their email lists and social media.
They also operate using systems of automations and funnels that help the operation run smoothly.
Such blogs are also run by a team of at least 3 people typically – The main blogger (owner), Tech person, Marketing person, and writers.
Some of these people are virtual assistants, whilst others are full-time staff members paid by the hour or per month.
★★ How Much Time, Money and Effort Is Required ★★
Blogging takes time! Let no one lie to you about this being easy.
For example, it has taken me at least 2 hours to plan and begin this epic post.
Then I have put in about 3 – 5 hours (over 2 days) to create it! Note though that this is a huge post!
The point remains though –
Assume you need to put in 1.5 hours to 2 hours a day when it has grown.
However, at the start, aim for 30 mins to 1 hour per day.
In terms of money, it requires very little money to start – You pay for hosting.
Before buying hosting, get your domain name for FREE.
Then as you grow, you buy various things if need be. I’ve listed these for ease of access in Best Resources.
I’ve made the effort to make this blogging section particularly big just to tell you the truth in detail.
Hopefully, it helps you take action if this is something you’d like to explore.

2. Create a Subscription Business
You probably pay a subscription for a number of things in your life today.
The business case for subscriptions is that subscribers are better than customers.
Creating a subscription business helps you create Automatic Customers.
You can create a subscription business for any product/service e.g. Cleaning, Cooking, Selling flowers, Gardening, etc.
The best part about this way of making money is that you have sticky recurring income, which is paid to you in advance.
But you must offer excellent value. In addition, subscription businesses are worth more than normal businesses.

This book gives you lots of everyday examples that you can check out as well info on how it works.
3. Tutoring Business Online
If you have the passion and skill, this presents a great opportunity for a side business.
The Private Tuition market in the UK alone is worth around £2 billion per year. This would be much bigger in the US, for example.
According to the Sutton Trust, around 25% of all students take regular tuition.
Tuition can cover anything from music lessons to exam prep or even teaching dance classes.
With the use of tools such as Zoom, Skype or Google Hangouts, you can teach multiple students at once.
Teaching students actively online could then be supplemented by creating passive income products.
This has to target a specific issue or area that helps people move forward.
E.g. I teach people how to create a personalised plan for Financial Independence.
In a past life, I created and successfully ran a tutoring business.
So feel free to get in touch if this is a business you want to start.

4. Offer Online Coaching or Consulting
Without knowing it, you have skills or experience that other people could benefit from.
You can offer your time as a coach or consultant and get paid well for it.
Using platforms such as Skype or Zoom for remote conferencing makes this possible.
This is one of the highest margin business areas in the world.
Hence why some of the largest companies (McKinsey, Deloitte, PWC, etc) out there are all into consulting.
You too can copy exactly what they do as a one-person band or a small team.
Whether full time or part time without paying rent etc.
The key is to identify what you are good at (your talents).
And apply it to something that makes your heart sing (your passions).
For example, I offer my ability to understand money (talent) to the area of education (passion).
Even if you are unable to identify a passion, apply your talent to where there is a need.
5. Amazon FBA
You own your own online store on Amazon, and source and sell your own products but they are Fulfilled By Amazon (FBA).
i.e. the products are packaged and delivered by Amazon.
If you join the FBA programme, you become eligible for Amazon Prime delivery of your products, which gives you a unique advantage.
Selling via Amazon rather than your own e-commerce store has an advantage.
Amazon spends a lot of advertising money to attract customers to its site. You get to sell to its pool of customers.
In addition, you don’t need employees or a warehouse to get started.
Best of all, you get to choose when you want to work, and how much you want to make.
6. Create a Low Ticket Membership Site
Membership sites are highly sought after because they give people access to expertise, community, and purpose in one place.
This is right at the heart of why good membership sites work.
By offering value from a genuine place, you build trust.
And with trust comes reciprocity and flow of value in your direction too.
Practically, it works like this –
You use information you know about (or have access to) and create ongoing valuable content (e.g. videos) around it.
Then you can host this on a website and have people access it by paying a membership fee per month.
Anything from £9.99 per month to £37 per month is considered low ticket.
This could be anything from a collection of cooking recipes/healthy dishes, or teaching business skills etc.
You also supplement the video content by showing up yourself at set times in a week to help your members.
This can be done through live sessions such as Facebook Lives. Or via Video calls on Zoom that people dial into.
We recently launched Our Membership Programme. Feel free to check it out and join our community of Dream Makers 😊.
★★ How Much Money You Can Make ★★
Imagine you charged £19.99 for your membership, and you had 1,000 members over time.
That’s £20k per month (£240k per annum) in revenue, from which you pay platform costs and business costs.
This could become anything really.
In America, I know of someone who has 20,000 women in her community and charges $29.99 per person per month.
That’s $7.2m per annum in revenue. Not bad at all for someone who isn’t even 40 yet.
She ofcourse didn’t start with 20,000 people. It all started with zero and grew over the years.
This is a very important point to remember.
We currently have circa 130 members at £37 per month and we got to this within 2 weeks of launching. Our membership is only 3 weeks old.
Even if you had 10 – 20 people at £10 a month, it is still a big win!
Basically, you can make this whatever you want. But remember, this is about helping people.
If helping people isn’t your focus, then this won’t work for you.
The best part about this way of making money is that you have sticky recurring income, which is paid to you monthly in advance.
Note that the cost per member drops as your memberships grow. This is because it is not costing you more each time someone joins.
They simply join via the same process as others and have the same content exposure.

Platform recommendation: I highly recommend Thinkific as a platform for creating memberships.

7. Create An Online School to Sell Courses
You might have noticed references to Financial Joy Academy on this blog.
This is something we are creating having listened to our audience concerning what they want to learn.
Through the online school, we offer direct learning video courses to help people grow beyond the basics of Personal Finance.
Such courses include Super Simple Investing, FIRE SuperPower, etc.
An online school like this can be a form of a membership site I covered above.
Or you can sell courses individually if you prefer.
Again, the ingredients are the same but the recipe is different.
I.e. You’re using what you already know and presenting it differently.
★★ Resources For You To Take Action ★★
Platform recommendation: We use Thinkific as a platform for our online school. I love this company because they’re super supportive.
Their platform is also the stuff of dreams for a non-techy person.

8. Create an Online Store to Sell Physical Products
An online store is an ideal way to sell products without the hassle of paying rent or having many employees.
It gives you access to more customers due to more available traffic sources online.
These traffic sources such as Pinterest, Google, etc, are free to access if you create complementary content to market your products.
On a personal note, I recently created an online store for my dad (67) as a gift as he has a passion for food.
It was custom built using Woocommerce and cost us only $280 (£210).
Now he receives orders for his African food products from places as far as Australia!
★★ Resources For You To Take Action ★★
Shopify has done everything they can to make setting up and running an eCommerce website as easy as possible.
They handle all the security, hosting, and credit card processing to give store owners more time to focus on promoting their website.
★★ How Much Money You Can Make ★★
You can make anything from a few £100’s to £1000’s each month.
This is all down to what (i.e. product selection and sourcing) you sell and how (i.e. marketing).
9. Start a Niche Food Business Online
Do you enjoy cooking or have an interest in food?
Good food will always be in demand. It gets even better if you can serve a particular niche and create healthy options.
The best way to start is to serve friends and family and get them to provide reviews, which will help attract other customers.
Who knows, you may even create a range that might end up in an aisle in a major supermarket.
Every food product you buy in large supermarkets started small one day.
With the emergence of platforms such as Just Eat and Uber Eats, it is clear where the demand is heading.
10. Drop Shipping
This gives you the opportunity to get your feet wet in the e-commerce world but without too much skin in the game.
Drop shipping allows you to act as a perfect middleman, bringing in the buyers and having someone else deal with packaging, shipping, etc.
Shopify defined it like this in their ultimate guide to drop shipping:
“Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment method where a store doesn't keep the products it sells in stock.
Instead, when a store sells a product, it purchases the item from a third party and has it shipped directly to the customer.
As a result, the merchant never sees or handles the product.”
The biggest difference between drop shipping and standard ecommerce is that you never stock or own inventory.
How it works in practice:
Find suppliers in cheaper labour parts of the world (e.g. China), who can manufacture and deliver.
Alibaba and Ali Express are a great platform for finding Chinese suppliers.
Drop shipping results in you getting a cut of the action for originating the business.
These are process dependent to be a success and pricing is very important given the thin margins.
Process:
Start with a winning product → Focus on Marketing → Create Ad Copy and Video Adverts → Suppliers
If you get it right, the entire thing could be automated, and your primary job will be to own and control traffic.

Ken,
WOW!! This is an amazing list. Thank you so much. I’ve signed up with Swagbucks and also looking at The House Crowd. Out of interest, with blogging, are there any hidden costs? Do you recommend 12months hosting to start?
Ken Okoroafor says
Hi Fiona
Thank you! It took quite some time to compile :). The House Crowd are worth looking into. There is also the option of RateSetter. Look at their reviews etc and see if the term of investment matches your intentions. I believe the minimum for both is £1k.
With blogging, there are additional costs if your goal is to make some money from your blog. Things like an email system or an accounting software (we use Xero). Basically, things you need to run a business. But these only start becoming necessary once you have built something substantial in a way and there is some income coming into the blog. Important to state the obvious that the income is business income from which business expenses get paid. Whether you get paid by the blog or not is a personal thing. We currently don’t.
On hosting, we recommend getting 36 months as it’s more cost effective. Although, get 12 months if that’s what you can afford.

That really is an epic post. Lots of value shared, Ken. I feel really motivated to try something out. I like that you’re open about sharing ideas that we can put to work. Sure I’m not alone in saying that I really appreciate all the work you put into each of your blog posts.
Ken Okoroafor says
You’re welcome, Meetul! I’d say, start with just one idea. Give yourself enough time to explore it. Things take time to yield results.

Impressive list of ideas. Good to see practical ideas that can be used in the UK and anywhere else for that matter. Thank you.

Awesome article! Facebook Lives are a great way to bring more attention to your business through livestreaming the sessions then repurposing them throgh the Creator Studio and downloading them/repurposing to YouTube, LinkedIn, IGTV, ttranscription, and more.
I actually wrote a full survival guide about Facebook Lives on my wesbite, explaining cool features available within the Creator Studio.

Thats a really detailed list of methods you can use. Personally, i use applications that allow you to earn money. Recent one that i discovered was Honeygain (honeygain.com if someone is interested). It allows you to sell your unused internet. As im usually on pc, i just leave the app running in background.
The Humble Penny says
Hey Carl, thanks! I have been contacted by Honeygain in the past actually. I’ll take a closer look.

Wow!! I can honestly say that this is one of the best articles I’ve read on how you can legitimately find out how to make money online. I have had real success with affiliate marketing but found Amazon FBA a bit of a challenge.
Thanks

Thanks a lot! We appreciate you reading 😀. Amazon FBA is an interesting one. I’ve only met one person doing well with it and keen to meet more. What was your biggest challenge?

Nice article 🙂 But i noticed that you didnt mentioned one cool opportunity – Honeygain. So, it makes me around $25 per month just by leaving this app running on my devices background. Basically what it does it just sells my unused internet traffic. Plus, you can always use extra $5 coupon secret5 to add some extra earnings.

Excellent! Hmm, it seems like your site ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog writer, but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any recommendations for newbie blog writers? I’d appreciate it.
The Humble Penny says
So sorry you lost your comment. I’d suggest writing it in a note app first and then copy and paste :). For recommendations, simply stay consistent with writing every week. Please don’t over criticise yourself. You’re learning a whole new skill.
